== Setting up GDM ==
What we are going to do first is sync portage and the overlays to make sure that we have the latest GDM available to us.
{{Console| <pre class="clear">emerge --sync && layman -s sabayon</pre>}}
Then emerge gdm by doing
{{Console| <pre class="clear">emerge -va gdm</pre>}}
Then backup your gdm.conf and your custom.conf by doing this:
{{Console| <pre class= "clear">cp /usr/share/gdm/defaults.conf /usr/share/gdm/defaults.conf.bak
cp /etc/X11/gdm/custom.conf /etc/X11/gdm/custom.conf.bak</pre>}}
Then browse to /etc/conf.d/xdm and change:
{{File|/etc/conf.d/xdm | <pre class="clear">DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"</pre>}} to
{{File|/etc/conf.d/xdm | <pre class="clear">DISPLAYMANAGER="gdm"</pre>}}
Also as a precaution check /etc/rc.conf and make sure that it says something like this:
{{File| /etc/rc.conf| <pre class="clear">DISPLAYMANAGER has moved to /etc/conf.d/xdm</pre>}}
== Configuring GDM ==
Now we move into the actual phase of configuring it to use XGL.
*Run {{Commandgui|gdmsetup}}
*Select the {{Commandgui|Security}} tab
*Click the {{Commandgui|Configure X Server}} button found at the bottom right of the tab
We will first delete all available entry's for the X server. Don't call me crazy. They'll be replaced.
*Click on the {{Commandgui|Standard Server}} that appears in the "Servers to Start" list.
*Click on the {{Commandgui|remove}} button. Goodbye X.
Now we replace that with a new X server.
*Click the {{Commandgui|Add/Modify}} button.
*Set the new server to use {{Commandgui|VT:1 for nVidia users or VT:0 for ATI users.}}
*Do not add any thing else. Click ok when done.
*Name the server {{Commandgui|Xgl.}}
*In the command line add this: <pre class "code">/usr/bin/Xgl -br -ac -accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv</pre> for nVidia users or <pre class "code">/usr/bin/Xgl :0 -ac -accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv:pbuffer</pre> for ATI users.
