By default, you cannot scan images directly to the GIMP, because there's no plug-in installed. Instead, use another application, for example XSane (media-gfx/xsane) or Simple Scan (media-gfx/simple-scan). However it is handy to be able to use GIMP for that - and it's possible! There are two ways.

First one. Simply install this package:


and restart GIMP.

Then just fire up GIMP and look in File → Create → xsanimage.

The option is disabled just after starting GIMP. Create an empty image first.

Second one. Install:


and restart GIMP. You'll get XSane interface.

It is possible to have these two packages installed simultaneously.
